BENGALURU: Around 4pm on Feb 24, Doddaballapur Rural police received an anonymous call on their landline, stating a woman had died under mysterious circumstances and her body was about to be buried.
Patrolling police responded and stopped the funeral procession half way. They got the pall bearers to lower the bier to the ground. An examination showed blood marks beneath the woman’s head.
Inspector Sadiq Pasha, who was summoned, examined the body more carefully and found multiple physical injuries on the face, head and other parts of the body. The body was shifted to a govt hospital, and an autopsy confirmed she died of head injuries.
This was how the mystery behind the death of homemaker L Radha alias Radhamma, 45, a resident of Neraleghatta, on the outskirts of Doddaballapur, unravelled.
Radhamma’s relatives, who were carrying her body, pleaded innocence, saying her husband Madhugiri Lakshman, 55, a mason, told them she fell and died while working at the farm.
Lakshman was not part of the group carrying the corpse, and his family told cops he was drunk and unable to walk.
“On Wednesday, we arrested Lakshman on charges of murdering his wife,” a senior police officer said, adding, “Lakshman told us on the night of Feb 23, he fought with Radha after suspecting her fidelity. In a fit of rage, he banged her head against the wall and she died. He then laid her body and called relatives, saying she fell and died. Before the arrival of others, he prepared the bier himself, placed the body on it, covered it with flowers and poured vermilion and turmeric on her face to cover the head injuries.”
