Now that the temperature outside has finally dipped below 60 degrees, it’s time to start thinking about winter coats again. This year’s trends are refreshing mix of classics with contemporary twists (think: coats with detachable scarves and that hit ankle length), bold statements (think: leopard prints and luxe shearling), and rich colors that prove black isn’t the only versatile shade out there. And the best part of all? Whatever your taste or style is, the current silhouettes serve as the perfect finishing touch to all winter outfits, whether you’re wearing a cozy turtleneck with jeans or lush sweater dress with boots.
Ahead, 9 winter 2024 coat trends I’m loving right now and know you will, too.
Shearling Coats
The oh-so-cozy shearling coat is back this season—and sleeker than ever. Seen on the runways of Miu Miu, Acne, and Saint Laurent (just to name a few), the latest iterations offer a dose of glam and warmth with its fuzzy texture, but more importantly, are the kind of heirloom styles you’ll wear for years to come. Nour Hammour and Yves Salomon are only a few of the brands exceling the modern shearling coat game.
Cape Coats
The folks at ChloĂ©, Khaite, and Saint Laurent have spoken: Cape coats are the It-silhouette of the season. Best recognized for its signature draped silhouette, the feminine toppers of 2024 are anything but costume-like. They’re elegant, glamorous, and above all else, a refreshing departure from the old-faithful wool coats.
Scarf Coats
Scarf coats are anything but new, but the cozy, two-in-one style has been picking up steam this fall and is already shaping up to be one of the buzziest silhouettes of winter 2025. Toteme is a go-to designer for the trendy topper, but don’t sleep on the modern iterations from contemporary labels such as Mango, Cos, and Massimo Dutti.
Leopard Coats
At long last, leopard is finally getting its well deserved time in the sun again. While it is technically considered a pattern (and a bold one nonetheless), the tawny combination of blacks, browns, and caramels serve as the perfect neutral to cold-weather ensembles. By Malene Birger and Rixo are examples of a few labels with stand-out styles this season.
Barn Coats
Great news: the barn jacket bonanza isn’t ending anytime soon. Famous for its waxed cotton shell and distinct corduroy collar and cuffs, the weatherproof country staple will continue to reign supreme this winter. Except instead of a shorter jacket, consider adding a longer version to your arsenal as it’s more insulating and will keep your legs warm and toasty on the most frigid of days.
Peacoats
Bottega Veneta and Prada sent updated versions of the classic peacoat down their runways, further proving the double-breasted style is a timeless style worth added to your outerwear collection. Since then, several celebrities have been rocking the style to too, including quiet luxury queens Katie Holmes and Gwyneth Paltrow. This season’s options run the gamut, from standard navy to herringbone to the palest of creams.
Burgundy Coats
Don’t put away your burgundy accessories just yet: the It-color of fall is here to stay this winter. And what better way to take the shade for a spin than with a coat? The rich red is just as versatile as black but adds oomph to an otherwise pared-back style.
Duffle Coats
I’m calling it: The sleeper hit of the season is going to be a duffle coat. Victoria Beckham debuted a camel coat iteration during FW24, but I’m already seeing tons of brands releasing their own versions of the toggled topper. Toteme makes a hard-to-resist shearling style that I have my eyes on, but if you’re looking for a classic dark option, Bottega Veneta and J.Crew’s takes are great everyday layers.
Black Maxi Coats
Sure, black tailored coats are always in. But the black tailored coats of of 2024-2025? According to the FW24 runways, they’re now hitting floor length. Perfect formal and casual events alike, the elongated toppers adds polish to whatever you’re wearing.
