10 Best Scottish-inspired Fall Fashion Finds

I know I’m late to the trend, but since recently streaming Outlander, I’ve been plotting my set-jetting trip to Scotland to cozy up in a castle and finally pen my novel (or to befriend a handsome single Scottish man, whichever comes first). I’m not the only one interested in Scotland. Visitors to Scotland in 2023 reached record numbers, with nearly 4 million international guests touring the country.

From charming coastal villages to Edinburgh’s rich arts and culture to luxury train journeys through the Scottish Highlands aboard the Belmond Royal Scotsman, a rugged and romantic trip through Scotland is alluring.

But, it’s the country’s heritage textures and love of layering that are driving my styling choices this fall and winter. Inspired by classic tartans, woven knits, cashmere layers, and durable tweeds, I’m compiling a warm and distinguished travel wardrobe that feels as modern and practical as it is timeless and elegant.

This list of Scottish-inspired wardrobe essentials is ideal for fall and winter travel, and features pieces designed for layering up in a misty, cold climate. Here are 10 comfy and cozy clothes to pack for a trip to the land of lochs, legends, and castles.

Tanming Wool Skirt

Amazon

This warm wool skirt is surprisingly tailored and structured for an Amazon garment. One reviewer raved about how it helped them achieve an Edwardian look perfect for their visit to Highclere Castle (aka Downton Abbey), noting the skirt’s “thick and durable” material and beautiful cut. It’s a versatile piece that pairs well with tights for chilly castle tours or tall boots for a walk through the Highlands.

Dôen Hartfield Pant

Doen

Inspired by vintage equestrian pants, these trousers from Dôen are made of organic cotton corduroy and offer a touch of stretch. A high-waisted fit flatters all body types, and details like leather buttons and a tapered leg give these pants a classic polish. Wear these with thick wool socks and loafers, or tuck them into knee-high boots for tromping through the Scottish countryside.

J. Crew Cashmere Shrunken Turtleneck Sweater

J.Crew

Scotland’s cold and windy climate calls for insulating fabrics, like cashmere. J. Crew’s pullover sweater is thin and not too bulky — perfect for layering. This sweater can be worn tucked into skirts, jeans, or trousers and finished with a blazer for an instantly put-together look. Available in four colors, it’s a versatile piece you’ll wear throughout a trip, from castle tours to seaside village strolls.

Walker and Hawkes Derby Tweed Bayston Gilet

Amazon

This heritage tweed gilet has an average 4.4-star rating. Crafted in Britain, it’s made with durability and the outside elements in mind. It features a quilted lining and a Teflon-treated wool-polyester blend that resists stains and water. The classic countrywear design features front patch pockets, a long back, and a storm-flap front with a zipper and snap closure. Be sure to check your sizing against the UK size chart (located just under the color selection) since U.S. and UK sizes can differ.

J. Crew Fair Isle Johnny-collar Sweater

J.Crew

A turtleneck sweater, especially one inspired by the Fair Isle knitting technique, is a direct nod to Scottish culture. The colorful knit patterns of Fair Isle sweaters originated in the Shetland Islands. Today, the pattern is noticeable all over the world. This J. Crew Fair Isle is made of buttery-soft bouclé and is currently 41 percent off.

BDG George Waxed Barn Jacket

Urban Outfitters

Beloved for their practical, water-repellent nature, barn coats are back. Waxed jackets are great for wet, misty climates like the Highlands. Barn jackets aren’t typically insulated, so layering with wool or cashmere will be the key to staying warm. This coat’s vintage look and functional durability make it essential for packing on a rugged and rustic Scottish trip.

J. Crew Stowe Parka

J.Crew

This J. Crew Italian-wool coat has a removable hood (great for when you need it on a rainy day) and a heritage-inspired corduroy collar. The tailored fit and classic gold-crest buttons give this a regal, polished look. You could wear this on a country walk or a night out in Edinburgh. And right now, it’s 40 percent off.

Dream Pairs Knee-high Boots

Amazon

Knee-high riding boots will complete your look and work overtime on a trip to Scotland as you’ll wear them in both rural and urban environments. This Amazon pair has reviews that commend their traction, with one reviewer noting that “these boots will hold their own on a slippery sidewalk.” If budget isn’t a factor, I’d opt for these riding boots at Nordstrom, which are shearling-lined, waterproof, and made in Italy.

Banana Republic Cozy Scarf

Banana Republic

This scarf from Banana Republic is currently half off! It’s soft and large enough to wear like a shawl and belt it. It comes in various tartan-like patterns, but the trendy burgundy color is my favorite.

Warrior Alpaca Argyle Wool Socks

Amazon

Inspired by the Scottish argyle pattern, these socks are necessary for layering under boots and the alpaca wool won’t feel itchy on the feet. One reviewer succinctly called out the socks’ numerous standout features, saying “they are warm but not too thick, are very soft, and the toe seam is flat so it doesn’t irritate your toes.” The happy customer also added that the socks aren’t itchy and stay up well.

Quince 100% Australian Shearling Gloves

Quince

These real leather gloves look and feel luxurious but are just $40. Crafted from sheepskin and lined with 100-percent shearling (the same warm interior I love Uggs for), they will keep hands warm but still dextrous in cold weather.
