The New Jones Road The Bobbi Kit 4.0 Looks Good on Everyone

There are a handful of women whose business acumen and artistry have shaped the beauty industry, and makeup artist Bobbi Brown may be on top of that list. For decades, her products have been in countless cosmetic cases around the world thanks to the popularity of her eponymous line (which she initially sold out of her home and, eventually, to Estée Lauder) and her wildly successful sequel, the cosmetics brand Jones Road. Plus, her creative work as a makeup artist has graced countless magazine covers, campaigns, and celeb faces.

The thread weaving through Brown’s success is her enduring belief that “makeup should be simple; it should be easy; and it shouldn’t take time to put on,” she says. “Jones Road is a brand that allows everyone to look like themselves. It’s about luminosity and textures that don’t look like you’re wearing makeup.” The JRB Roadies Facebook group of nearly 60,000 fans proves she’s succeeded, as do the streams of customers in her six (soon to be seven—get ready, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn) stores. In a moment of reflection, Brown shares, “Jones Road has been in my head and my heart forever. I’m very happily surprised that I’m not a one-hit-wonder. Because I was worried, I’m not going to lie. It’s like, I did it once. That doesn’t mean I can do it again.” But she did, perhaps because beauty is her language and her excitement for creating newness never dulls. When asked if there’s a dream product she’s dying to create, she says, “You don’t think that if there is something in my head, it’s not instantly out of my lips?” If we’re lucky, it could soon be on ours.

Bobbi Brown

Until then, in celebration of Jones Road turning four, Brown has launched The Bobbi Kit 4.0. Inside, there’s a chocolate-y eye shadow, a lip balm called Me (which mimics Brown’s natural lip tone), the best-selling miracle balm (“for people who need life put back into their skin—put it wherever you want to glow,” she says), and a new only-available-in-this-kit gel eyeliner. Super fans might remember that Brown created the gel eyeliner category long ago; this is her updated formula, clean like the rest of the line. We’ve been jazzed to see how Oprah Daily staffers, varying in age, makeup application aptitude, and skin tone would create a look with the same kit. Four editors, four years of Jones Road, and four products. Here’s how it all went:

Jones Road The Bobbi Kit 4.0

Bobbi’s newest kit features the new and exclusive Gel Liner in Brown, the Precision Eyeliner Brush, a Mini Miracle Balm in your choice of Pinched Cheeks or Cocoa Bronze, a Just a Sec in Cool Brown, and a Lippie Stick in Me, all bundled in a limited edition Jones Road Tyvek Bag.

“Sometimes I walk the aisles of a beauty store and relish the kaleidoscope of choices. And sometimes I just want someone to hand me a cosmetics bag and say, Here, put these on. I promise they’ll look good on you. This is that bag. The shadow taps on with a fingertip, the eyeliner (brown! and it’s lovely!) glides across my not-so-firm eyelids, and that miracle balm…I’ll admit that years ago I used to find it a touch too goopy, but these days my skin’s drier. Now it gives me gleamy flushed cheeks without making me look all dolled up—exactly what I want.” —Kate Sandoval Box, beauty director

“I’ve become more and more of a no-makeup makeup girl as I age, so I was excited to try this kit. Liner has always been my thing, but I’ve shied away from gel liners that require a brush—no extra work for me! Thankfully this came with one and putting it on was super easy. It was a nice change of pace from my go-to black, much softer yet it still defined my eyes. I’m not a shadow wearer, but this one gave my lids such a pretty touch of color. And the lip color is super subtle, which I love. It’ll have a permanent place in my gym bag. I’ve always been into glowy skin, and the Miracle Balm in Cocoa Bronze on my cheeks gave me just the right dose of radiance. I love it on my lips, too.” —Holly Carter, contributing lifestyle editor

“I’m already obsessed with the Miracle Balm. I used it on my nose and forehead, and my skin feels dewy and looks illuminated—a win-win. And, turns out, gel liner is actually really easy to apply. I’m so glad I can create a natural look for every day with just four products.” —Rae Ann Herman, market director

“I did my makeup in less than five minutes with this kit. The Miracle Balm in Pinched Cheeks might be my favorite. Using my fingers, I applied a little bit on the apples of my cheeks, eyelids, and a dab on my lips. The color payoff is very light but buildable, which makes it foolproof. I finished my look with the brown gel liner, which is so creamy and easy to fix or blend if you mess up, thanks to the precision brush. If you’re someone who loves a soft makeup look that doesn’t take much time or effort, this is for you.” —Genesis Rivas, beauty editor
